Amid new guidelines, a warning data centres could 'cut corners', threaten energy, water supply

Australia has the second-largest pipeline of data centre construction in the world, after the US.

The question may no longer be whether water demand will increase—but whether you are prepared when it does. Recent reports indicate that large data centres can consume significant volumes of water for cooling systems, with some forecasts suggesting demand could rise dramatically over the next decade. Government agencies and water authorities are already calling for more sustainable water management and long-term planning to protect water security.

Infrastructure Australia has reported that future hyperscale data centres may consume water equivalent to thousands of households, while Sydney Water forecasts substantial increases in water demand from proposed data centre developments by 2035.

While no one can predict future water restrictions, increasing demand from households, industry, agriculture, population growth, and AI infrastructure highlights the importance of securing independent water sources wherever possible.
